Hollywood was watching the showdown this weekend between “Inception” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Many insiders predicted a close box-office race between the two, though in the end it wasn’t even close.
And the winner is Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.” The mind-bending movie won the weekend with $60.1 million. Even more impressive is that the film did this without being 3-D.
Nolan’s film also opened on IMAX screens.
In second was last week’s top earner “Despicable Me” with $32.7 million.
“Apprentice” opened in third with $17 million and has taken in just over $24 million since it opened last Wednesday.
Fourth place went to “Twilight: Eclipse” and fifth place to “Toy Story 3.”

I'm disappointed about "Apprentice"'s poor performance in the box office. I saw it on Sunday and found it to be a wonderfully entertaining movie.
Generally, I don't care who wins the latest box office contest but I was hoping Sorcerer's Apprentice would do well so someone in Hollywood would get motivated to do a more grownup movie that uses magic as a theme; like hopefully a Harry Dresden movie.
After finally seeing Inception this weekend, I left thinking... This would have been even cooler in 3D. Not a loss by any means that it wasn't in 3D, but some of those shots would have been even more killer.
It was in 3D and IMAX as well.
