Sam Raimi walked away from one of the hottest franchises in Hollywood earlier this year but will end up working with one of the hottest actors in Hollywood for his next project.
Deadline reports that Raimi has signed on to direct the upcoming “Wizard of Oz” prequel with actor Robert Downey, Jr. in the lead role of the Wizard.
Downey would play the Wizard Of Oz before he became the Wizard Of Oz circa the 1939 iconic film: he’s in fact a circus wrangler transported by tornado to the mysterious world of Oz where he gets mistaken for a know-it-all.
The script is currently being re-written and no word yet on when production will begin.
And, of course, the movie will be in 3-D.

Sam Raimi directing an adaptation of the wizard of Oz, we might end up with something that Frank L Baum would approve of. Can we see the tin man chopping himself up, or the scarecrow carving out his brain, that would be sweet.
The flying monkeys will be coming right at you!
