Barrymore Signs on to "Wizard of Oz" Sequel

Just as Disney looks to mine a sequel to “Cinderella,” Warner Brothers is looking to produce a sequel to “The Wizard of Oz.”

The studio has resurrected its 2002 project “Surrender Dorothy” with actress Drew Barrymore working as producer and director. The project was originally put on the fast track in 2002 but later canceled. Now with the current interest in fairy tale sequels sparked by “Alice in Wonderland,” Warner is willing to give the project a second life.

Written by Zach Helm, who also gave us the script for “Stranger Than Fiction,” the story follows the great, great granddaughter of Dorothy who has to learn how to use the power of those ruby red slippers to keep the Wicked Witch of the West from taking control of the kingdoms of Earth and Oz.

No word yet on whether Barrymore might take the starring role in the film or not. She wasn’t the star of her directing debut “Whip It” last year.

There is also another Oz project circulating in Hollywood that would see Robert Downey Jr. take on the role of the Wizard.

Hoookay. I think the Oz thing has sort of been done to death, but if they can make something good with it, I'll probably see it.

"...Disney looks to mine a sequel to “Cinderella"..."

Yuh what? How the heck to you do a sequel to "And they lived happily ever after"? Do you add "...until they got bored being so happy all the time and had to call in the royal marriage counselor"? I mean, an hour and a half of watching them be "happily" would be incredibly dull.
