Freddy Scares Up Box Office Success

Audiences were looking for a good scare before the summer blockbuster season kicks-off.

And to scare them, they looked to the re-imagined Freddy Krueger to do it.

The reboot of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” opened at number one this weekend, taking in $32.2 million. The debut at number one means that Freddy has had a movie debut at number one in four decades, according to USA Today.

The film is the ninth installment for the franchise, which began in 1984.

In second place was “How to Train Your Dragon” which continues to do solid business. The animated film took in $10.8 million, bringing its total to $192.4 million since its release a month and a half ago.

“Date Night” was third with “The Back-Up Plan” coming in fourth.

Another debut, “Furry Vengeance” about animals attacking Brenden Fraser and not actually a movie featuring voice mail personality Fox Leader came in fifth.
