Marvel Studios has been trying to get Emily Blunt to sign on to one of its comic-book projects for the past several years. Blunt was linked to the role of the Black Widow in the upcoming “Iron Man 2″ and also to the female lead in “Captain America.”
In both cases, Blunt passed on the projects.
Now the actress is telling MTV News why she decided to not take the role, despite the desire to star in a “movie where I kick ass.”
“I’m a big supporter of [director] Joe Johnston and I think that ‘Captain America’ is going to be really fun and I gather that the story is really interesting,” she said. “It just wasn’t what I wanted to do next, to be honest.”
Blunt said that she seriously considered the role in “Captain America” but decided that it wasn’t what she wanted to do next. The actress wanted to pursue work in a comedy film next and she was worried about the long-term commitment to the Captain America franchise.
“There’s definitely a high commitment level and I’m not someone who likes to plan too much ahead,” she said. “That would also be an issue for me as well.”
So, will she star in a super hero or comic book film in the future?
“I don’t know,” Blunt said. “Who’s to say? I don’t tend to be fatalistic about these things. I think for me the job always has to be the right thing at the right time. Neither of them happened to be that.”
