Reboot Rage: "The Man From UNCLE"

Another classic television property is about to get the big-screen reboot.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “The Man from UNCLE” is set to make the jump to the silver screen.

Written by Max Borenstein, the film will be directed by David Dobkin.  The film version has been in limbo for a few years but appears to be on the fast track at Warner Brothers.

Running from 1964-68 on NBC, the TV series featured the espionage adventures of Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, agents of United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), who fight the forces of T.H.R.U.S.H. (Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity).

Robert Vaughn and David McCallum starred in the original version.

No word yet on if the movie will be in 3-D, but we can probably expect that news any day now….

Then, this film and "The Avengers (1998)" -- not to be confused with the Joss Whedon Marvel franchise pic--can battle it out in an attempt to be the worst movie adaptation of a cool show.

Although there are possibly other contenders out there (Dragnet anyone?)

    • Well, they already did Mission: Impossible, they already struck out badly with I Spy and Wild Wild West, we have a fair effort in The Saint, and I haven't seen the Steve Carrell Get Smart, but it's out there. What's left besides the shows with British roots, like "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy"?

I don't think they'd try to also redo M:I as a TV series again just yet, because they probably have a few more movies left in the franchise coffers, and because I think Leverage is filling that TV niche quite nicely.

Can't Hollywood come up with ANYTHING new? What made TMFU what it was was the period in which it was set. They can't get the period right when they remake these movies and setting in in present day would make it something different altogether. What a shame.

C David Dent - Dragnet was already done - Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks. Don't give 'em any ideas for another reboot on that!

  3. D. C. says:

Maybe Hollywood could make a movie based on the TV series Mission: Impossible. You know, instead of just slapping the name onto a Tom Cruise vehicle.

  4. Lowell in Columbus says:

Yep - Leverage is doing a GREAT job of filling the M:I genre slot!

I can understand that, I am not the demographic that Hollywood is making films for any more... but what make them think that using ideas from the "golden age" of TV will bring people back to the theatre? Some of the shows were good, some bad, but with only 3 major TV production companies we had to watch SOMETHING. Or we just went to our rooms and grabbed a book off of the shelf.

What's remake will be optioned next from Hollywood - "Sanford and Son", "Chico and the Man" or "Joanie Loves Chachi" . . . .

I hope that Warners Bros has enough forsight to actually do 7th Son!

  5. ALibertarian says:

At least Robert Vaughan, David McCallum and Stefanie Powers are all still alive. So they could appear cameos.

    So, for "Girl from U. N. C. L. E.". . . . . . . . .wait for it

    . . . . . .

    . . . . .

    . . . . .

    .

    Megan Fox??

  6. The Master says:

Sanford and Son was already a remake, when it first came out in the US

They could maybe start to re-make all the Films that Hollywood let fall apart in storage facilities over the years due to lake of care.

Or even better higher someone maybe that can come up with their own idea instead of just turning what ever TV show they happended to be watching that night before into a movie.

Or maybe they could just make remake all 700 police academy movies
