After a solid run at opening number one at the box-office, the “Saw” franchise saw its streak end last year when “Paranormal Activity” easily beat “Saw VI” o their opening weekend.
That may be why Lionsgate is reconsidering its plans to offer two more installments in the series before wrapping up the franchise.
Co-writer Marcus Dunstan told Demon Radio that the poorer than anticipated performance of Saw VI means that the plans for two wrap-up films following the double trilogies might be curtailed.
“The idea is well why make two movies when we can make one really excellent movie that wraps up as best we can? And it’s going to be in 3D which sort of adds to the spectacle,” he commented. Noting that “nothing’s official yet”, Dunstan said he had “a strong feeling that it’s going to be Saw VII which will be also known as Endgame.”
Director Kevin Greutert was moved across to “Saw VII” from “Paranormal Activity 2″, and has blogged at his unhappiness and the lack of time to achieve major changes he has requested. “It’s tough: the sets are built, the traps are built, the storyline is set, and any major changes mean throwing out existing stuff, and it’s hard to find the time, money and will to do things a different way.”
