December 15, 2009 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: Film News

Director Guillermo del Toro says that when it comes to casting his upcoming two-part “The Hobbit” that he wants several of the actors from Peter Jacksons’ “Lord of the Rings” trilogy to reprise their roles.

One them them is, of course, Ian McKellan as Gandalf.

Another is Andy Serkis as Gollum.

Del Toro, says that he “cannot imagine Gollum being played by anyone but Andy [Serkis],” the actor who portrayed the character in the first set of films.

Casting is also underway in New Zealand for extras for the upcoming film.

Of course. To maintain the ties between the two sets of films, every effort should be made to get the original characters, including Hugo Weaving.

I would think that’d be a no-brainer. The only one I can maybe see recasting out of necessity is Bilbo himself. I doubt that Ian Holm is up to all the running about required of young Bilbo at age 78.
