“Avatar” Run Time Announced

November 24, 2009 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: Film News

Better make sure you stop by the bathroom on your way into “Avatar.”

According to Screen Rants, the upcoming movie from director James Cameron will have a running time of 156 minutes (just over two and a half hours).

That’s down a bit from initial reports that had the film’s running time at just over three hours (though you can probably expect we’ll see a lot of  that footage on DVD and Blu Ray).

The mid-to-long runtime of the movie ensures that theaters can run the standard double showings in the evenings at around 7 and 10 p.m. in addition to the three daytime screening times.

There was a time before fast food and ATMs that movies were epic in length. It wasn’t uncommon for a movie to go 4 hours with an intermission. I personally wouldn’t mid seeing some movies stretched out. All too often it feels like there is either too much crammed into a short 90-120 minute film or it leaves me feeling like I just never had time to really tell a story worth my money.

Ha, from a person who can’t even edit THEIR posts… Personally, run length doesn’t matter to me. What matters is that a film is complete. I for one, am very excited about this film, and its run length.

The people who really hate epic movies are the theater owners. They can’t charge more for a 3 hour movie than they charge for a 2 hour one, but a 3 hour epic means cutting at least one full screening a day from their schedules. Even if the screenings sell out, they often make less money on a megahit 3 hour epic than a moderately successful 2 hour movie.
