He’s been the leader of the Autobots for decades.
But in the first issue of IDW’s latest Transformers comic book, long time leader Optimus Prime has resigned the mantle of leadership, reports USA Today.
The plotline is part of the new series’ attempt to liven up the series and throw readers and fans a few curveballs.
“This first story arc is all about upheaval and change and what happens when you realize that all the tools and skills you’ve previously spent your life accruing are no longer effective,” says writer Mike Costa.
Editor Andy Schmidt agrees with the need for change. “Ultimately, our book is based around a universal theme of ‘transformation’ and, more importantly, that real change and real transformation must first come from within.”
The issue also includes another shake-up in the universe of “Transformers”–the death of Ironside.
“Fan reaction has been mixed. Everything from ‘Wow, they’re really making changes and taking this seriously. Can’t wait to pick it up!’ to, ‘I love Ironhide, I’ll never read that!’,” says editor Andy Schmidt.
Schmidt say that while there may be some fan resistance at first, the reasons for the two bold moves will become apparent as the storyline progresses.
Costa hints at some familiar characters getting more time in the spotlight. “When the dust settles, we’re going to end up with familiar characters in unfamiliar roles, including a couple criminally underused fan-favorite characters finally at the foreground.”
Costa recognizes that fans are attached to these characters and the roles that they’ve been cast in for more than two decades. He cautions, however, that without change there can be no growth. He views the launch of the new ongoing series as the beginning of that natural growth phase.
“These are the same characters we’ve known for 25 years, they’re just having to face the new challenges of what to do when their war is over, and all they’ve known is how to be a soldier. This first arc is almost a metaphor for that time in a teenager’s life where he leaves high school and enters college, and everything he knows is turned on its head. It’s scary, but it’s also really, really exciting.”

I don’t read the comics…
But, how can Optimus Prime resign? Wouldn’t it have been better to do it like the movie (animated) and have him pass the Matrix of Leadership on… Its not like Autobots age.

I don’t read the comics either, but maybe he’s looking into new career paths.
The new version of that Discovery Channel ad, with a lot of the different show personalities singing “I Love the Whole World”, has Optimus Prime saying “boom-de-ya-da, boom-de-ya-da” in the middle, and it cracks me up every time.

Maybe he is going to take the spot of “The Robo-King” for Buger Kink?
