Paramount Extends Olive Branch to Theater Owners

October 27, 2009 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: Film News, The Biz In Show Business

If you think “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” is making a quick debut on DVD, you’re not alone.

Last week, we reported that theater owners were unhappy with Paramounts’ decision to release “G.I. Joe” and “The Goods” on DVD and Blu Ray a little over three months after their theatrical debut.  Theater owners said that by releasing the films to DVD so quickly, Paramount was taking away from the potential long term box office receipts for the theaters.

Paramount has responded, saying that the release of these two films in such a tight window was an exception and not a policy change.  As a further olive branch, Paramount has pushed “The Goods” back into late November and a more conventional DVD release window.

The news comes as theater owners are set to meet this week in Orlando, Fla., for annual ShowEast convention.

“I think ultimately, Paramount remains committed to separate DVD and theatrical windows, and completely committed to protecting the moviegoing theatrical experience,” Paramount vice chair Rob Moore said.
