carrThe man who brought us “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” will bring us the reboot of Johnny Five.

Dimension Films has signed director Steve Carr for the remake of the 80’s hit film, “Short Circuit.”

Scripted by Dan Milano, the remake is a robot reboot that brings the iconic Johnny 5 into the 21st century. Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.

The new “Circuit” is part of Dimension’s strategy to offer audiences familiar name franchises at the theaters.  Also included in this new focus are a new “Scream” movie, a fourth “Spy Kids” and a new “Hellraiser” installment.

That sounds you heard was the sliver of optimism I had for this project collapsing in on itself. :-( There is literally only ONE nice thing that can be said about Paul Blart. It was better than Observe & Report.

I’m up for a new Short Circuit movie, I’m a fan of the original. But what worries me is that they’re probably going to do it all in 3D. The facination of the original was that Johnny 5 was created using actual moving robotic parts. A CGI Johnny 5 would be just too fake.

Only if Steve Guttenberg, Ally Sheedy and That Indian guy make a return, I cannot recall his name!
