UPDATE: LucasFilm NOT Prepping New “Star Wars” Trilogy

October 22, 2009 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: Featured, Film News, Other

star-wars-pictureIf you want more of “a galaxy far, far away,” you may be in luck.

MarketSaw is reporting that George Lucas and LucasFilm are currently considering a new “Star Wars” trilogy–and that it would be shot in 3-D.

According to the report, Lucas would serve as a producer for the new trilogy and would not take the director’s chair.  Among those rumored to be in line for directing duties are Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola.

One litmus test will be the success or failure of James Cameron’s upcoming 3-D movie, “Avatar.”  If the film catches fire at the box-office, then that could be the impetus for a new “Star Wars” trilogy to go into production.

So, this brings up an interesting question–do we want a new “Star Wars” trilogy?

You can let us know in our poll below.  And feel free to tell us what you think in the comments section.

UPDATE: Ain’t It Cool News has contacted LucasFilm. The company stated that it is currently not working on a 3-D version of the films for theaters and that no new “Star Wars” films are under development.

Several other sites have pointed out that this may be a campaign to help ensure the success of “Avatar.”

It’s not that he’s a bad director it’s that he’s a TERRIBLE writer, especially dialog.

I would be totally up for a new trilogy if an addition to another director he also had co-writer. I think GL is a decent writer but not on his own, if he had someone to bounce ideas off of. But other wise, I would look forward to it.

    More John Williams’ music?
    More lightsabers?
    More Wookiees?

What do you think my answer is?

Lucas is a great conceptual storyteller. THX 1138, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, American Graffiti, Willow, and the continuation of the Willow story with Chris Claremont. All brilliant.

His dialogue was bad in Star Wars because he was focusing on the visuals to a fault. He is a visual storyteller at heart, and dialogue is just fluff to him. That can be a problem. Unfortunately, everyone during the Prequels were such Yes-Men (hello, rick McCallum) that no one challenged him on anything.

Just as the Prequels were more a vehicle for the new digital technology, and advancements in special effects, I’m afraid a new Star Wars trilogy would simply be a vehicle for advancements in 3-D technology. But why the heck not? Lucas is ever the innovator.

I don’t think this rumor is true. Someone is trying to pull my leg on this one. How do I know? Because this news sounds GREAT!!!!!!!

I think Lucas should do what he has allowed with the Star Wars novels, where he simply has guidelines for timelines and plot for the writers to follow, but the writers are free to create dialogue and story by themselves. Lucas needs to back down a little and realize he shouldn’t be controlling the films themselves so much.

As far as storyline goes, I would love to see the new Jedi Order coming about, but I could do without a movie version of the Yuuzhan Vong.

For a long time I thought I was the only one who got the impression that Rick McCallum was nothing more than a yes man. Since apparently that is not the case then I vote to not have him back either.

Can’t be any worse than the horse’s brownstuff that hollywood shovels out each week.

Plus the last one was one of the better ones.

I’ve always thought Jar Jar deserved an entire trilogy to himself. Thanks George.

Maybe, it depends who its about.

  11. Randomtime on October 22nd, 2009 11:43 am

I’d like it if it was set in the Old Republic timeline (KOTOR, KOTOR2 and The old Republic) - they’d make great films (if done properly)

  12. Arkle on October 22nd, 2009 12:30 pm

As long as he doesn’t write the dialogue, I’d be OK with that.

  13. Kurt in St. George on October 22nd, 2009 12:56 pm

Didn’t Lucas say he wanted to get back to small personal films? Yea, like that was ever going to happen. I guess after American Graffiti he didn’t have any more personal stories to tell and he hasn’t had a new adventure idea since he created Indiana Jones. Of course most writers would have sold their souls to have come up with either Star Wars or Raiders so I guess I should cut him some slack.

The Star Wars Universe has a lot of room in it so another trilogy could work as long as Lucas doesn’t write the dialog. ” I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board.”

Spielberg doesn’t put up with Lucas’s CG loving crap … ditch the endless CG and bring back what starwars actually looks like.

  15. Kevin on October 22nd, 2009 4:46 pm

I’d like to see the Darth Bane trilogy.

  16. Kyle Nin on October 22nd, 2009 4:50 pm

Would this be Episodes 7 through 9, then? Or a remake? Because I really don’t think people would go for a remake.

  17. Guest on October 22nd, 2009 4:55 pm

Forget Copola and Spielberg. If you want to do a new tirlogy go with JJ Abrams on the first movie to set the tone, Ridley Scott on the second movie to make it dark and Peter Jackson on the third movie to wrap it up in specatular fashion.

I wonder if any of these rumours have come about off the back of them gearing up to start filming the TV series - I wouldn’t be surprised if the pilot was made as a TV movie

  20. Chris B. Behrens on October 22nd, 2009 5:09 pm

    Some thoughts to ponder…

Mark Hamill is only one year older than Liam Neeson.

Harrison Ford is twenty years younger than Christopher Lee.

And Carrie Fisher is just made of awesome.

  21. Zero on October 22nd, 2009 5:26 pm

Hopefully not a remake of the originals. Maybe some stuff from the expanded universe and novels. I think that would be a great idea, Repeat after me slowly THRAWN SAGA.

  22. Ivan on October 22nd, 2009 5:36 pm

Lucas HAS to write it, but he can’t DIRECT it. His winning productions are when he wrote the dialog but had nothing to do with making it happen onscreen.

  23. Scott on October 22nd, 2009 7:31 pm

I like how so many people are referring to how Lucas has done great films…and Spielberg…he’s just as bad lately. Someone even said Spielberg wouldn’t put up with Lucas’s penchant for loving CGI. Did anyone even SEE Kingdom of the Crystal Skull??? I’m pretty sure if you did a search for “worst movie sequel ever,” or “sequel that ruined a franchise for millions” you’d find it. I know it made money, and I know they’re talking about doing more in that vein, but it was so bad I literally felt all my childhood and young adult adventurous fantasies and memories being sucked out of my head while watching.

  24. Kyle Nin on October 22nd, 2009 7:47 pm

What happened to that TV series they were talking about? When they first announced it, didn’t they say it would be on TV by like 2008? What’s taking so long?

  25. Indiana Jim on October 22nd, 2009 8:44 pm

    Darn, it’s false. Maybe.

  26. Skiznot on October 22nd, 2009 9:10 pm

Mr. Lucas, I’m still waiting for me sequel to Howard the Duck!

  27. SuperScotty From Canada on October 22nd, 2009 11:50 pm

it would be so great if we can get more storys from a galaxy far, far away… but what could or should be the storyline?

im a big fan of the books but what more can be told on film?

its not like things have been changed before (need i say the “M” word Brian?!)

  28. Isaac on October 23rd, 2009 1:57 am

Bottom line: Lucas tells very good big grand stories. I have no problem if he were to create the outline of the story, but he should never touch the details of dialogue again. Leave that to someone else. Create the template, and oversee the visual presentation (both of which is incredibly good at), then leave the details of directing, and writing the specific scenes to other talented people.

A trilogy done like that could well be the best Star Wars ever created.

Everything I’ve read on the net says that casting for the live-action SW TV series is still taking place. I guess shooting will start in 2010, and the series debuts in 2011? That news is probably a couple months old now, so things might have changed.

I can’t believe how many people rip Lucas to shreds. There may be good evidence for the dialogue problems, but if that were really a ‘problem’ would the Star Wars franchise be what it is? The simplistic, cheesy dialogue is part of the charm intended or not. I will gladly see another Lucas written, and directed Star Wars Trilogy. (okay - minus jar jar).

Let’s recast Mark Hamill, Ford and Fischer and the rest of them and see how Luke has faired at rekindling the Jedi Religion. Did he have cheesy children with Dorthy Hamel haircuts? Seriously, I’d like to see it. With the right amount of action mixed in with some classic cheese.

i would love to see a trilogy only if it’s in the future.that follows the books
i don’t need to see a reboot of the same old stuff.been there done that.

  34. Christopher Smith on October 28th, 2009 9:35 pm

if the make a new trilogy it needs to be in the old republic era

  35. Kevin on November 7th, 2009 8:51 am

I don’t think they need to make any more star wars… the prequels were a bit of a letdown. Especially Attack of the Clones, I love Star Wars but that movie was just plain not good. And they seriously need to get some better actors if they’re going to make a new set, not some actors that sound like they’re reading the lines for the first time while filming… I agree with the previous comments, movies based of the Old Republic might be interesting to see, just don’t make things worse. The Empire Strikes Back.. that’s all I have to say.

  36. justin pierce on November 8th, 2009 11:23 pm

    George,

You must be a part of Star Wars. These movies are your life. Look deep inside and see that it is the truth.
You have to be a big part of the project. If Spielberg does direct, which I would love to see a godfather
Director over the movies instead, he must add realism to the movies and prefect dialogue.
Now, Coppola should do the directing. Great record, AWESOME dialogue.
