Some of you may be too young to remember a time when we didn’t have 3-D first-person shooter games. But there are some of us who may recall the early excitement of seeing the games hit computers for the first time.
The granddaddy of them all was id Software’s popular and groundbreaking game, “Wolfenstein 3-D.” The premise was fairly simple–you’re B.J. Blazkowicz, stuck inside a castle full of Nazis during World War II. Your mission it to escape, while taking out as many enemies as possible.
Back in the day, it was one of the most popular games on the market and helped usher in the shareware revolution in gaming.
Now id is returning to its roots with the release of new game, “Wolfenstein.” Featuring the return of Blazkowicz, a veteran in the Office of Secret Actions, on a mission when he comes across an amulet. He discovers its special powers tie into Nazis’ experiments aimed at harnessing the power of the Veil, an alternate universe with supernatural powers.
The amulet becomes a way for Blazkowicz to enter the Veil and fight the Nazis on new, otherworldly turf. “When he is in the Veil, he is a little faster, and you can see your enemies easier,” says Eric Biessman, creative director of Raven. “It’s allowing you to fight differently.”
Kevin Cloud, co-owner of id says the game is a sequel to the classic title. “What is at the core of all these Wolfenstein titles is great weapons (including a particle cannon and a flamethrower) and almost an arms race to some extent against an unexpected enemy.”
The new game hits stores today for the XBox 360.
