A plan to pre-tape the presenation of eight Emmy awards and show the clips during the three-hour live broadcast on CBS has been nixed according to Variety. Instead, the awards will be presented live during the broadcast later this month.
The plan was intended to help the Emmy broadcast run on time and within its three-hour broadcast window. However, it met with a great deal of resistance from the other networks and Emmy participants.
“This decision was made to mend relationships within the television community and to allow executive producer Don Mischer to focus his full attention on producing the creative elements in the telecast,” said TV Academy chairman-CEO John Shaffner in a statement. “Our goal is to celebrate the year in television, honor excellence and this year’s great achievements with the support of our industry colleagues and our telecast partner, CBS.”
The move is the latest in a series of perceived flip-flops by the Emmy awards. Earlier this year, the Television Academy considered moving the awards up a week to avoid competition with an NFL telecast of the the Dallas Cowboys taking on the New York Giants. However, it was discovered the date in question would interfere with the MTV VMA awards and the plan was scrapped.
