Before he took the role of Henry in the upcoming movie, “The Time Traveller’s Wife,” actor Eric Bana was worried about the backlash from fans of the novel.
“I was just joking yesterday that I’m way more scared of Time Traveler’s Wife fans than Star Trek fans,” says Bana, who starred in “Trek” as the Romulan commander Nero. “You’re adapting a much longer novel, and it’s a really difficult novel to adapt. I was very concerned.”
Part of the concern came from many who felt the complex novel would be “unfilmable” as a linear storyline. “Wife” centers on a couple played by Bana and Rachel McAdams, who meet and fall in love. However, Bana’s character shifts in time without warning.
“When you’re doing an adaptation, you know it’s going to be different and you’ll lose some things along the way, but can you maintain the point? This was about the love between them,” McAdams said. “I think that’s what the book is about, too. Yeah, it is scary to attempt it.”
Clare and Henry “struggle to find each other again. They’re constantly at odds with one another. They’re never on the same page at the same time. They’re out of sync, but they still make it work,” McAdams tells USA Today.
The script was worked and rewritten multiple times according to reports. Last week, we brought you news about how the original ending from the novel was changed after a test-screening audience didn’t like it.
“The Time Traveller’s Wife” opens in theaters tomorrow.
