We’ve always known that Hollywood, especially those big fat corporate offices were filled with rats, but how little did we know rodents could be so bankable.
Of course the first King of all the Rats has to be that lovable little mouse called Mickey. However, he stood alone for decades, that is until Remy and the gang in the box office bonanza known as “Ratatouille”. That little rodent cuisine enterprise grossed triple-digits millions in box office and before you knew it Hollywood was awash in rodents from a return of those pesky singing chipmunks to the now cheezy guinea pigs in another box office hit “G-Force”.
Not to be outdone, Paramount plans on reviving one of MGM’s ratta-tat-tat favorites with the return of NIMH. Yes, the studio that brought us the unabashed mega hit reboot of “Star Trek” hopes to cash in on the rat-craze and develop a full feature-length live-action/animated film based on the Newbery Medal-winning 1971 Robert C. O’Brien children’s book “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.” Director Neil Burger of “The Illusionist” is currently in talks to write the screenplay.
“Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” tells the tail, er, that is tale of a mouse named Mrs. Frisby who is forced to leave her farmland home after the illness of her son forces her to the big city where she hooks up with a group of lab rat escapees. These rats are not like anything Mrs. Frisby has experienced before. They possess high tech wizardy, live in a highly evolved society with leadership, a constructive labor force and more.
