The SciFi Channel is gone….long live SyFy.
The network that until yesterday was known as the SciFi Channel will complete its rebranding efforts today. The new name for the channel, as reported months ago on Slice of SciFi, is SyFy.
To help kick-off the new brand name, SyFy will debut “Warehouse 13” tonight at 9 p.m. EST. And later this week, the second half of the third season of “Eureka” returns.
In the coming months, fans can look forward to the new “Stargate: Universe” and “Caprica” as well as several BSG features such as a “Battlestar Galactica” movie and a new mini-series or two that could lead to possible series.
SyFy is hosting a kick-off event today in New York City. On hand will be stars from “Warehouse 13” and “Destination Truth”. It will celebrate the opening of Syfy Imagination Park at Rockefeller Center. The centerpiece of the Park will be interactive set pieces inspired by the Syfy *Brand Film “House of Imagination,” including a Giant Viewmaster® and a Larger than Life Lollipop.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m. this morning.

Sci-Fi Channel died years ago and at least that name can rest in peace. All I can say is that Issac Asimov is turning over in his grave at this outcome. Wrestling, baaaaaad movies and scare tactics, in it umptten versions were not the vision of this channels founders. Long Live the memory of the Sci Fi channel. I miss Sci-Fi Buzz!!!!

Perhaps they wanted an infectious name?
Josh says
If by “infectious,” you mean an open, oozing wound, then yes. I’d say they succeeded.
Claystation says
Yeah, the SciFi Channel died YEARS ago. Except BSG, their programing has been CRAP for a long time.
Andrew McDonald says
It’s only been a few hours (I am watching the two SG1 movies) and I am already experiencing postal urges every time I hear the announcer say “Imagine Greater”.

What is the world coming too? How will the next generation know about the roots of science fiction..do they think ‘SyFi’ will creep into everyday terminology? product identification ? what in the hell does syfy mean any way…my spell checker is exploding…

Check your VM logo from a couple weeks back. 😉

This is great news, this mean someone else can create a real science fiction channel that shows real sci-fi content. What does SyFy mean anyway? The Sci-Fi channle died for me when they canceled Farscape and refused to allow it to go into syndication. What bunch of losers.
reppoHssarg says
SyFy is so JyFy!

Geez. Is it that this is now another one of the run of the mill networks? I grew up with Sci Fi man. I know that overtime the programming was the pits and the “science fiction” movies were really corny. But I really don’t understand how the re-branding is going the reverse that. I agree with the other comments RIP Sci Fi.

SCiFI channel always had a great nametag with the Saturn emblem . I even have it on my phone . It looks Kool. Hope you put it back. The new logo looks really stupid. It kills the stations eye appeal. Please reconsider . A Real SCIFI fan..

The dumming down in America continues, SyFy for dummies.

It about fits the mentality of those who watch Ghost Hunters and ECW. The channel had been going down hill for years. It’s going to get more and more homogenized and run of the mill until it’s basically the same as MTV is now. So everyone but those who love sci fi will be tuning in, alienating the audience who made them who they are. Gone are the days when networks truly cared about specializing. Quite sad. That’s why I’ve nearly abandoned television all together. Just about every channel I used to love is now serving up the same bottomfeeder garbage.
This is what president Dave Howe said on an interview I read on CNN:
The last thing we want to do is alienate our core audience,” he added. With the new name, shows such as “Galactica” can be exposed to a wider audience, one not scared away by all that “Sci Fi” connotes (“space and aliens and the future,” in Howe’s words).
I feel kind of offended. Excuse us for liking time travel, aliens and space. You know, sci fi stuff. XP

Such a craptastic name change, but since they didn’t show sci-fi, much less science fiction, not a great loss.
Don’t worry, the cartoon network plans to branch out into live action shows – that have nothing to do with cartoons – so why is it even called cartoon network anymore? Maybe they can do a trademarked rename such Ker tun!
