When news of actor Shia LaBouef’s broken left hand reached director Michael Bay, the director couldn’t believe it.
LaBouef broke his hand in an auto accident last July during the filming of “Transfomers: Revenge of the Fallen.” The injury came during a crucial stunt sequence from the upcoming film, Bay told SciFi Wire. Bay had to adjust his filming schedules to accomodate the actor’s injury and still have the stunt sequence look right on-screen. Bay said he filmed as much of the sequence as he could with a stunt double and then trying to work with the actor.
Part of the problem was that the injury suffered by LaBouf could be made worse if he jammed his fingers. To help out his leading man, Bay ordered a top-of-the-line cast made for his leading man. LaBeouf’s film cast included Kevlar fingers so thin they would photograph as skin.
“The problem was if he were to jam his fingers he could lose his fingers forever,” Bay said. LaBeouf broke two fingers of his left hand.
When LaBeouf offered to take his cast off, Bay insisted he put it back on. “We were just trying to protect the hand,” he said.
Fellow co-star Megan Fox said that LaBeouf’s refusal to let the injury stop his work inspired her to take her participation in the movie to a different level.
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” opens in theaters on Wednesday.
