“Star Trek” Warps to Top of Box Office

May 11, 2009 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: Film News

The reboot of the “Star Trek” franchise was a hit with movie goers over the weekend.  The film has taken in an estimated $72.5 million over the weekend.   So far, the film has taken in just over $76 million, thanks to special openings of the highly-anticipated summer blockbuster Thursday evening.  The movie also shattered the record for opening on an IMAX screen–beating out last summer’s “The Dark Knight” by just under $2 million.

The opening was the strongest and largest of any of the eleven “Trek” franchise films.  The first weekend gross puts the movie on track to be the first entry in the series since “The Voyage Home” to cross the $100 million threshhold.  Last week, it was reported that Paramount executives were readying a sequel.

The success of “Trek” translated across the box-office with receipts up 18 percent over this weekend last year.  According to initial figures, overall box-office receipts were the highest ever for the second weekend in May.

In second place was “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which had a steep drop off, taking in $27 million.

In third was the romantic comedy, “Ghost of Girlfriends Past” with “Obsessed” and “17 Again” rounding out the top five.

Final figures will be available later this week.

What can I say? It is an odd numbered Trek movie and it blows worse then all the other Odd numbered Trek movies.

I’m surprised that woman are not protesting in front of the theaters.

How could Leonard Nimoy even allow himself to be in this picture? Or Majel do the voice of the computer?

Gene Roddenberry is rolling over in his grave.

There are tribbles in the movie….watch the scenes when we first meet Scotty and you’ll see them in the background.
