Actress Lindsay Duncan will step into the TARDIS for the second “Doctor Who” special, according to the Press Assocation. Duncan will play Adelaide, a character described as “the Doctor’s cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet.”

Duncan’s episode will air later this year on BBC 1.

“I’m thrilled to be involved in ‘Doctor Who’. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m really looking forward to working with David Tennant and the ‘Doctor Who’ team,” said Duncan.

The title for the episode hasn’t been revealed, though we do know it is being written by Russell T. Davies and Phil Ford. Production on the episode will begin later this year.

“”Lindsay is an incredibly talented actress and I’ve been an admirer of her work for some time,” said Davies. “We are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team and playing the Doctor’s most strong-minded companion yet.”

“Doctor Who” returns to the BBC on Easter with “Planet of the Dead.”
