Hollywood just wrapped up its strongest box-office performance for January ever thanks to a solid showing by several movies this weekend.
Liam Neeson’s new thriller “Taken” took the top spot, raking it $24.6 million.
Kevin James continued to prove a big draw at the box-office as “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” took in $14 million. The movie is one rapidly approaching the coveted $100 million mark at the box-office in just three weeks of release.
“The Uninivited” opened in third and “Hotel for Dogs” took fourth. Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated “Gran Torino” rounded out the top five.
The overall box-office sales were up seventeen percent over this time last year. Super Bowl weekend usually sees lower box-office turnout.
Final numbers will be released later this week.

I enjoyed “Taken” more than I’d hoped I would. It put me in mind of “Man on Fire”, but much leaner and direct on the build up to the crisis.
