Audiences said “Yes” to new movies by Jim Carey and Will Smith, but it wasn’t an overwhelming one.
Jim Carey’s new comedy “Yes Man” debuted at the top of the box office, taking in $18.2 million over the weekend. Will Smith’s new movie, “Seven Pounds” was second with $16 million and the animated “Tales of Despereaux” was third with $10.5 million.
Overall, movie tickets rang up to $88 million overall for the weekend, off by almost half of the same weekend last year.  Some analysts blame severe storms on both the east and west coast for keeping movie-goers at home instead of venturing out to the movies.
“We can handle the holidays; the one thing we can’t control is the weather,” says Dan Fellman of Warner Bros. “And people just stayed home. The storms brutalized everybody.”
Final numbers will be out tomorrow.
