The first several “Harry Potter” films were released in November, leading audiences to expect a new helping of Harry and the rest of the crew from Hogwarts along with their Thanksgiving dinner. Summit Entertainment is following the lead in scheduling installments of Stephenie Meyer’s big-screen adaption of her “Twilight” novels.
Summit announced yesterday “New Moon” would open in theaters on November 20, 2009. As we reported yesterday, director Chris Weisz will take the helm for the second installment in the series.
“Same time, same place,” Summit distribution boss Richie Fay said. “If it’s also the same gross, we’ll be very pleased. Hopefully, we’ll have even better results.”
“New Moon” will face stiffer competition at the box-office than “Twilight” did this year. Three other marquee films are scheduled to open that Friday, including Guy Ritchie-helmed “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey and Jude Law; Sony’s animated feature “Planet 51,” featuring a voice cast topped by Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott and Jessica Beal; and MGM’s untitled Three Stooges project, which the Farrelly brothers are directing.
The weekend chosen by Summit is the one leading up to Thanksgiving. Some industry insiders speculate that there could be some movement of films’ release dates in the coming months.
