Vampires were big business at the box-office this weekend. The long-anticipated debut of “Twilight” had a big opening, taking in over $70 million according to initial estimates.
The adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best selling novel easily outdistanced last weekend’s top money maker, “Quantum of Solace.” “Solace” dropped to second, edging out another debut feature, the animated “Bolt.” “Solace” took in $27.4 million with “Bolt” taking in $27 million for third. The new Bond movie roared past $100 million with the weekend gross.
Overall, ticket sales were up 17% over last week.
Final box office numbers are due out Tuesday.

Not suprising since the fan base is teenage girls.
Big Mack(PDX) says
And Summer, she’s been pimping this pretty hard last several months…. not a problem but I’m all vamped out… probably catch last eps of TrueBlood season.. and hold off on vamps till it comes back… really an oversaturated market…. probably even wait for Underworld to release on DVD (especially since Kate Beckinsale(sp?) not in it)).
Keith says
meanwhile on RT it’s scoring about 44%, so I’ll wait till DVD to see this one, especially since I’m not a 14yr old girl
Michael Mennenga says
Yeah… DVD sounds like a good idea. (I’m not a 14 yo girl either.)
The vampire market is about to crash I think. I’m in complete agreement with Mack, totally too many vamp properties.
gwen aka tllgrrl says
Um…sorry. No disrespect but I’m really not interested in a vampire story written by a BYU grad.
Give me the Grown-up vampire universe of TRUE BLOOD.
Yeah, baby. *That’s* what I’m talkin’ ’bout.
Michael Hickerson says
Well, I heard on another podcast that we as the sci-fi/fantasy fans should be happy that at least a genre film is doing this well and was this anticipated.
I can be happy for that.
Having read the books, I wish it was an embracing of a higher quality of product. I’m not the demographic for the books, but was curious about them because so many people are reading them.
They’re not for me….and I accept that.
Still, they’re not well written and the fourth novel is a travesty.
