After 27 hours of discussions, negotiations between SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers were suspended yesterday according to the Hollywood Reporter. A federal mediator, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, was unable to get the two sides to agree on a new contract.
“As previously authorized by the national board of directors, we will now launch a full-scale education campaign in support of a strike authorization referendum,” SAG said. “We will further inform our members about the core, critical issues unique to actors that remain in dispute.”
In response to SAG’s decision to seek strike authorization, the AMPTP said, “SAG is bizarrely asking its members to bail out the failed negotiating strategy with a strike vote — at a time of historic economic crisis. The tone deafness of SAG is stunning.”
No timeline was given as to when a vote to strike could take place.

Hey . . . perhaps with actors on strike, people will be forced to pay attention to what the politicians are doing.
Nah . . . they'll just watch more reality TV.
. . . hmmm . . . maybe I should buy stock in the SciFi Chanel.
You've gotta be frakkin' kidding me.
No, I'm pretty sure most people don't pay much attention to what politicians do.
But yes, I was kidding about buying stock in the SciFi Chanel.
I was referring more to the whole "another strike" issue.
I know.
Sorry, just being a pain. On a serious note, I'm thinking the global economy woes might play a role in whether they'll have a strike or not. I am thinking people are not going to sympathize a whole lot with actors as they're having to struggle with their own finances. Might be a PR nightmare for actors in general.
I'm thinking they will keep working/negotiating/bitching about stuff under the current contract until they have more leverage.
Then again, I don't know anything about the business other than they make a heck of a lot more money than I do.
