Kripke Responds to Supernatural Fans

October 27, 2008 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: TV News

Warning: This article contains mild SPOILERS for Thursday’s episode of “Supernatural,” ‘Yellow Fever’   If you haven’t seen it yet and don’t want to know what happens, please turn back now.

Following last Thursday’s episode of “Supernatural,” fans have been calling Dean a certain four-letter word that rhymes with stick.

The clamor and criticism has become so loud that series creator and producer Eric Kripke issued a response to the fans, addressing the situation.

“I’ve never before responded directly to the fandom’s comments about an episode, and I don’t plan to make a habit of it, but I couldn’t resist dropping in a thought about ‘Yellow Fever,” he said. “Which is this: Dean is not a d—.”

“None of the writers, or anyone on the creative team of Supernatural, think Dean’s ever been a dick, past, present, or future. He’s a hero. Dean did not contract the ghost sickness because he’s a dick. Victims contract the illness because they use “fear as a weapon.” Dean asks Lilith at the episode’s end, “Why did I get infected?” And she cryptically responds, “You know why. Listen to your heart.” We, as the writers, probably should have emphasized this mystery more, I take responsibility for that omission. But the point is: the reason he was infected is because of a secret he’s keeping. A dark secret that will be revealed in Episode 10. And not at all because of any d—ishness, implied or otherwise.

“Thanks, gang.”

Kripke issued the response via TV Guide’s Matt Mitovich on TV Guide On-Line’.

Maybe the character of Dean isn’t on the level of the other people “infected” in the episode, but yeah, he IS kind of d***ish. I don’t get why there was such an “uproar” about this.

Dean CAN act like a major jerk, if he wants to. Just look how he acted about his own impending death back in Season 3.

Hellloooo . . . archetypal hot, brooding, “tough on the outside, not so tough on the inside” guy. Did I mention hot????

Well, I think Dean’s pretty damaged and he can be pretty confrontational when someone tries to get to the core of who he is without his permission. But I don’t think he’s a dick. I’d be more inclined to be worried about how expendable women seem to be on the show…
