Oscar Contender Opens Well Across Asia

“Painted Skin” (”Wa pei”) is the new feature film from Hong Kong and Singapore and a real contender for the 2008 foreign-language Oscar. It’s opening day in China saw it gross $2.2 million (USD), according to reports from Xinhua, China’s official Chinese news agency.

Director Gordon Chan (”Julius Caesar”) opted to open during one of China’s major holidays called Golden Week in hopes of gathering a large crown for the film’s premiere.

“Painted Skin” is a fantasy period piece about a demonic vampirish woman who lures her lovers to her then eats their skin and hearts. It stars Kun Chen, David Leong, Yuwu Qi, Betty Sun and Donnie Yen.
