Tim Roth (“The Incredible Hulk”) has taken the lead role for Sky One’s new TV drama “Skellig.” He joins Kelly MacDonald (“No Country for Old Men”), Bill Milner (“Son of Rambow”) and John Simm (“Life on Mars”).
One unique feature about this TV presentation is Sky One’s plans to release the film in theaters after it premieres on the satellite network to allow it to reach a broader audience.
“Skellig” is based on the novel by David Almond and tells a dramatic fantasy about a North England lad, played by Milner, who finds the mythical Skellig, a mystical creature of legend that is part owl and part angel. The creature has taken up residence in the garage of the family’s new home.
“Skellig” will be a big undertaking for a television film production costing Sky One nearly $18 million (USD) to produce. Principal photography began this week in Cardiff, Wales, the same city that the BBC’s “Torchwood” series is shot in.
No details yet on when Sky One plans on airing the film or when it will make its theatrical run. Sty tuned to Slice of SciFi for updates.
The premise sounds naff, but with Tim Roth leading the cast I think I'll give this the benefit of the doubt.
In my opinion, Skellig is one of the most original children's/young adult novels in recent years to come out of the magical realism genre, and personally I found it to be one of the most beautiful, so I definitely have high hopes for this movie.
