Applegate Free of Cancer

August 19, 2008 by Sam Sloan   || Category: TV News

Christina Applegate, star of the sitcom “Samantha Who?,” happily reported that she is now cancer free. The 36-year old actress was diagnosed with breast cancer last year after a mammogram and follow-up biopsy revealed the disease.

Applegate has been routinely getting mammograms since age 30 because of the high genetic risk for the disease in her family line. He mother also had breast cancer and early detection helped her to survive.

“They got everything out, so I’m definitely not going to die from breast cancer,” gleed Applegate for an interview on Good Morning America (GMA) Tuesday.

Applegate told Robin Roberts of GMA that when she was first told of the biopsy results she was “so mad and I—I just remember I was—I was just shaking. And then also immediately, I had to go into [the] take-care-of-business mode,’ which was [to] asked them, ‘What do I do now? What—what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?’”

She did what needed to be done, changed her diet to macrobiotic, saw a surgeon and oncologist and now, to put it in Applegate’s own words…”I’m clear, absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out….”.

Applegate will return to work shooting new episodes of “Samantha Who?” which the network had already renewed for a second season.

ARRGH…I thought this was sci-fi news. Now that you have a new studio does that mean you are changing the format of the website to “Slice of Entertainment Tonight”?

No, but she is starring in a show on television that is (loosely) rated as a fantasy series. Besides, if someone can be helped by getting a mammogram and possibly find a cancer they weren’t aware of and get it removed before it spreads because of this report,…then we have served all humankind beyond our SF banner. Even we geeks care.

I am glad Sam ran this myself, her story is very inspirational to those who are going though the same thing. And also it speaks to her bravery though out this whole ordeal. How many times to we read about a hollywood elite that breaks down at the least little thing. “Oh I broke a nail, better get my people onto it, I’ll have to ask for millions more on my next project just to make up for my emotional lost.”
It is refreshing to see someone in hollywood, dealing with things head on and sharing her ordeal in order to educate others. Well done Sam and crew, and all the best to Ms. Applegate. Looks like Kelly has grown into a very strong woman indeed.

Unfortunately the news story missed the bit about the double mastectomy she under went to free herself of the cancer. A bit more drastic than a change of diet. All the best to her… a very brave decision to take.

On a positive note, I think Sam is onto something…How about starting a charity organization called “GeeksCare.org”?

We both like the idea of the geekscre.org. Please keep us informed Sam, we will gladly sign onto it.

Was “Shrike” being sarcastic again or did he really had a turn of heart in 24 hours? It was still a very insenstive statement he first posted. The latest stats and projection indicate more than half of the population will get a cancer. I hope it was a true turn of heart….fate has a way to reward those…

Has there been any scientific proof of the benefit of a macrobiotic diet yet? Anyway, I wish her all the best!

Shrike may be an insensitive lout, but he was not being sarcastic about “Geeks_Care.org”..

I have no ill feelings towards anyone who is battling cancer or any other disease (except maybe Osama Bin Laden). I hope Christina Applegate lives to 100 and I hope she is fully recovered..

My contention is that this news story is not related to scifi news in any way, so it does not belong on this site. I don’t consider “Samantha Who?” a scifi or a fantasy drama.
