It’s Elementary Mr. Downey

July 10, 2008 by Sam Sloan   || Category: Film News

Several weeks ago we broke the story that Robert Downey Jr. was in negotiations to star in a new film about the Arthur Conan Doyle detective Sherlock Holmes. Now we can report that the Iron Man himself will headline the drama for Warner Bros set to begin filming this fall, probably October, and it will be directed by Guy Ritchie (”Snatch,” “Swept Away”), husband of the Material Girl, Madonna.

In what will be his first job since the blockbuster “Iron Man,” Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in “Sherlock Holmes,” the drama that Guy Ritchie will direct for Warner Bros.

The movie will not only take its material from the Doyle classic writings but also borrow from the comicbook of the same name.

Considering his past, Downey would be perfect casting as Holmes.

There is this small problem - that he isn’t British! I live in fear of another Kevin Costner accent… :O

Actually, Downey has done a British accent in the past is is quite good at it.

RD Jr. is a great actor, so I will trust him and give this a fair shot, but I have some small nit-pick, as he looks nothing like the descriptions of Holmes, who is tall, lanky, with a hawk-nose.

Also Sam, did you have to bring up “Swept Away” as an example of Richie’s work? How about “Snatch” and “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels”, both of which are excellent movies.

If I hadn’t of brought up Swept Away then nobody would have stuff to bitch about. ;)

BTW: The original version of that film (I think in the 60’s or early 70’s) was really good. The Ritchie/Madonna take on it - meh.
