Some SF Programs Predicted to Be Big

July 8, 2008 by Sam Sloan   || Category: TV

The Hollywood Reporter is predicting that SF and genre-related television programming will be big this year with J.J. Abrams’ “Fringe” leading the pack.

Also slated to end up being a winner are two show’s adapted from British TV. “Eleventh Hour” (CBS) and “Life on Mars” (ABC).

Past established shows such as NBC’s “Heroes” and the CBS/Jennifer Love Hewitt feature “Ghost Whisperer” are expected to top their timeslots again this year.

However, the same report also indicated that other new offerings may not stack-up as well against established shows in their timeslots. Still three SF-based hits in one season is nothing to squint at.

“Fringe” follows a female FBI agent who is forced to work with an institutionalized scientist in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena. The early previews for this one look awesome.

“Life On Mars” is an American adaptation of the hit British series of the same name about a detective from the 21st Century who awakens after a serious car crash only to find himself back in time 30 years.

“Eleventh Hour,” was first done in the U.K. as a miniseries starring Star Trek and X-Men alum Patrick Stewart and Ashley Jensen. This American version will pitt English actor Rufus Sewell and Marley Shelton as a government scientist and his attractive counterpart as they try to save people from deadly scientific experiments gone awry. Sewell was recently seen in the acclaimed HBO series “John Adams.”

A few others to keep an eye out for are Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse,” also one that looks great in previews. The second season of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” on Fox and the return of “Kyle XY” on the ABC Family Network.

I have no doubt that “Fringe” will be a hit.
