It’s the end of the world as we know it….or at least the end of the world seen through the eyes of best-selling novelist, Stephen King.
Originally published in 1978 and re-released as an expanded edition in 1990, many fans and critics agree that The Stand is King’s best work. The novel was adapted into a successful miniseries in the mid-90s.
Now the story will be coming to life again at a comic store near you.
At this weekend’s Wizard World in Philadelpha, Marvel Comics announced plans to adapt King’s epic in comic-book form. The adapation will be the third time that the comics giant and the horror giant have worked together. The previous two were adaptations of stories from King’s popular Dark Tower series. The first was a best-seller on the stands and the second is currently in the midst of its limited series run.
Marvel’s adaptation of The Stand will come from the “complete” edition published in the early 90s.
“From the very first cough to the sinister showdown with the Walkin’ Dude himself, this is the official and authentic translation of Stephen King’s sprawling saga—taken from the “Complete & Uncut Edition”—only as Mighty Marvel can!” said editor Bill Rosemann.
Working on the book will be artists Mike Perkins and Laura Martin, letter Chris Eliopolus and cover-artist Lee Berjemo. Mike Perkins will create the script for the series from King’s novel. As with the Dark Tower series, King will be closely involved with all phases of the adaptation and have creative and editorial control.
No word yet on how long this mini-series will run. But given the length of King’s epic novel, you can expect this one to run a significant number of issues when it hits comic stores.
