Disney has crowned Jake Gyllenhaal as its Prince in the film “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,”" according to Variety.

The star of “Zodiac” will headline Jerry Bruckheimer’s big-budget adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit fantasy actioner, with an eye on creating another Disney franchise similar to “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Gemma Arterton (”Quantum of Solace”) has been cast as the female lead.

Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a prince in sixth-century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Production is set to begin in July on location in places like Morocco and London. Disney would like to release the movie sometime in summer 2009.
