Actor Ewan McGregor is currently in negotiations to star in “The Da Vinci Code” prequel “Angels & Demons” with two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks.
Hanks will return as symbologist/history detective professor Robert Langdon on the heels of the Illuminati, which has plans to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If McGregor signs on, and the money is that he will, the role he’ll play is Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, also known as Janus, the late pope’s closest aide who initially helps Langdon in the investigation.
Already in the cast is Ayelet Zurer (“Vantage Point,” “Munich”) starring as a woman who works with Langdon while also figuring out who is responsible for the death of her father.
Ron Howard is set to direct the prequel which will be based on the Dan Brown novel, who wrote “The Da Vinci Code.” Howard also helmed “The Da Vinci Code.” Filming should begin in various locations throughout Europe this June.

I really like Obi…. I mean Ewan, despite his not so good reactions towards Star Wars.
He shouldn’t worry, I love SW and still I think he can stand for himself with all the great movies he has made over the years, and this one will be an excellent addition to his repertory, and now if you’ll excuse me I have to go get the book.
Um . . . should that be a spoiler? Do you want to really mention the part about Janus, for those who haven’t read the book? It’s been a while, but I don’t think you are supposed to know that right off the bat.

Oh yeah. Ron, Tom and Dan ran for their lives all the way to the bank. The Da Vinci Code was one of the highest grossing films of 2006.
One thing I have come to appreciate after nearly 3 decades in this business is never gauge anything’s success quotient by critical or even film festival response. You wait for the fan response which eventually equates to the bottom line.
Angels & Demons is being made because Code was a mega hit film with moviegoers across the globe. Who cares what a few radical religious fanatics or armchair critics think? Moviegoers loved it. And, in the end, that is what matters most because that means they spent their hard-earned dinero on it.

Me? I liked the books. I’ve re-read DaVinci twice and have even listened to the audiobook.
Sam, I agree: The movie audience made that movie a hit. No one with a functioning brain gave a rat’s ass what the fundies “thought”. I say “thought” because they didn’t see the film…and thinking is something they have trouble with in the first place.
And let me say this, for the record: I’d do Langdon in a heartbeat.

In my opinion, the book was pretty awful. It made The Da Vinci Code actually look good. I’m sure McGregor would do a pretty decent job with the role if he decides to take it, but his appearance in that movie would be the only reason that I’d be interested in seeing it.
Also, Tallgrrl, I must say, I know quite a few of these “fundies” about whom you speak. A lot of them went to see The Da Vinci Code, just to see what the fuss was about. Be careful about what kinds of remarks you make. Generalizations are usually incorrect.
