What To Look For In New DVD Releases

Here is just some of what you can expect to find loitering on your favorite electronic or video store shelves over the next several days and weeks.

mist.jpg“The Mist,” the film based on the Stephen King novel that had an ending that pleased some and ruffled the feathers of die hard King fans, even though Stephen said he was happy with the way director writer-director Frank Darabont brought the movie to credits. Cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Thomas Jane, Toby Jones and Andre Braugher as a group of townsfolk trapped in a store surrounded by the mist, from which horrifying creatures emerge. Whadda they wanna do? You guessed it leave the store and run into the fog. Be looking and listening to Slice of SciFi over the next few weeks for our “The Mist” DVD giveaway contest.

bonnieandclyde460.jpgThe 1967 Warren Beatty/Faye Dunaway classic 1930′s styled gangster movie “Bonnie and Clyde” gets a new release out on DVD as a “Collector’s Edition” on Blu-ray and HD DVD on April 15. The film co-starred Dubb Taylor and Michael J, Pollard.

wristcutters_1.jpg“Wristcutters: A Love Story,” the bizarre love story about suicides hooking up after death and starring Patrick Fugit and Shannyn Sossamon. They are just some of the people who try to cut short their lives only to end up in a dreary purgatory filled with tedious jobs and decrepit infrastructure. The Lionsgate DVD will include deleted scenes and commentary from Fugit and director Goran Dukic.

For those who like to spend money on DVDs for TV shows that were once free to watch there are these to keep any eye out for.

s4.jpg“Sliders: The Fourth Season” starring Mr. Cockroach himself, Jerry O’Connell and his time traveling/alternative universe hopping companions return with all 22 episodes of the show’s fourth year. This 1990′s SF TV series comes in a 4-Disc set from Universal.

daybreak.jpgThe short-lived but critcally praised Taye Diggs series “Day Break” will get a DVD release with the “Day Break: The Complete Series.” The story surrounds a detective (Diggs) who is forced to live the same day again and again (ala “Groundhog Day”) as he goes on the run and tries to prove his innocence after he’s framed for murder. The four-disc set has all 13 episodes, including the seven that never aired, plus cast and crew commentary and interviews.

inv.jpgFinally, we come to the one most of us SF geeks have been waiting quite some time for. Of course I’m talking about SCI FI Channel/Universal’s “The Invisible Man: Season One.” This 2000 fan favorite only lasted two seasons and was a contemporary telling of H.G. Wells’ original tale. Only this one involved a small time thief, played brilliantly by actor Vincent Ventresca, who inadvertently becomes the subject of an invisibility experiment. Of course he is then sought to use his new abilities to fight the bad guys (of whcih he use to be one) in society. The first 23 episodes come in a five-disc DVD set.

Wristcutters is a great example of adaptation of story to film. What a film and what a story!!
I have loved Edgar Keret from the moment he started writing stories and can recommend his collection of short stories "The Busdriver Who Wanted to Be God" (Toby Press $12.95)to anyone. The last story in this volume "Kneller's Happy Campers" is the story that Wristcutters was based upon. If you like reading even half as much as you like watching movies: Enjoy!
