New U.S. Spy Satellite Launched
No sooner did the U.S. have one of its spy satellites go bad and plunge into a decaying orbit, that they have sent up a new one into space. The errant satellite from two weeks ago was successfully destroyed by a missle fired from a Navy vessel at sea.
This new spy satellite was lifted into space by an 191-foot-tall booster Atlas 5 rocket.
According to authorities at Vandenberg Air Base the liftoff and launch were successful but, because of the highly secretive nature of the device, wouldn’t confirm the coordinates of its projected orbit.
“It went great,” said Mike Rein, a spokesman for United Launch Alliance, which made the rocket.
The classified satellite will be used by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), the agency that oversees all U.S. spy satellites. Of course the NRO wouldn’t release any mission details to the press. However, the agency is confident they can keep this spy satellite from falling back to Earth before its usefulness is completed.
