Brand new “Doctor Who” companion Catherine Tate indicated in a recent interview in England that actor David Tennant may be entertaining the idea of leaving the show that turned him into an international star. Tate, who starred in last season’s Who Christmas special as “The Bride” returned to season four as the Doctor’s new companion, temporarily replacing Freeman Agyeman (Martha Jones) who has moved over to star in the Who spin-off, “Torchwood.” Agyeman, as well as Tate and Who’s most popular companion actress, Billie Piper, return in season four.
While doing a guest stint on the Jonathan Ross Show Tate said, “I think it’s maybe David’s last series.”
When The BBC was contacted as to the truth of Tate’s claim they simply refused to comment.
When pressed for more details Tate did indicate that Tennant might be talked in to staying for at least one more season but her part in the show would definitely end after this one is completed.
The upcoming 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special will star Kylie Minogue and debut in England on Christmas Day.

With rumors that Davies is leaving at the end of series four, I can’t see that the Beeb would have a new Doc and a new producer at the same time. I could see Tennant doing half a season for series five and bringing in the new Doctor.
Which I vote for Hugh Laurie!
Sam says
Ooh! Yeah! Laurie would make a great Doctor Who – love his attitude on House.

I doubt that Hugh Laurie would leave house to do this. I had an idea though, what if there was a female doctor this next time around? Would be a fresh idea.

Safe bet Hugh L is getting way more now than he would playing the Doctor.

This has now been dismissed by DT himself. He hasn’t decided yet whether he is leaving. This was said at the press-screening for the Christmas special. I guess Catherine Tate, who said he might be leaving, didn’t have all her facts straight.

I thought I read on the BBC’s site that he’d do S4 and return for S5. I could have sworn I read (but cant find now on the site) that S5 wasn’t going to be until 2010 because Tennant had a year long commitment to do some Shakespeare on the stage.

The RSC has now confirmed he is playing Hamlet next summer.
I hope this helps.

thats ridoulous that David tennant is leaving doctor who.
heis the best doctor since tom baker and that is saying a lot.

ok, all the people that state the doctor will be female, do you realise he is called a time LORD for a reason? and the history of doctor who…..do you actually know it? Female “time lords” were called “time ladies”, the doctor does not change sex, he never has, if he did, it would be such a freaking joke and ridicule the whole entire history of galifray and the series. I would break every vhs and dvd I own.

if anything, the idea that there is no series 5 in 2009 because david t is playing hamlet, only shows that it remains open for him to stay on as the doctor. Now if there was a confirmed series in 2009, and tennant was known to be doing hamlet, this would confirm he would be leaving. But as it is, it still leaves the door open for him to continue.
Why has noone suggest simon pegg (shaun of the dead) he would be AWESOME as the next doc.
rich s says
hugh L is too old to be the doc now, david t is a fresher faced doc with more energy. House is bog right now, doctor who takes 9 months, meaning house would hav to end or get a new actor. Whilst Doc who is huge worldwide, Im sure Hugh has thought it would be dumb to quit a huge US smash to play a UK based sci fi drama where he would obviously have to work 9 months a year, for less cash……….thought Im sure its much more fun!!
Jade says
I have watched ep 12 of the 4th series and he has the doctor has started to re-generate, which means that there is going to be a new doctor, surely?
But David Tennant was the best doctor after Tom Baker, and i think i would be really put off if there was someone else playing the doctor and not David Tennant.
