Slice of SciFi News Briefs

September 20, 2007 By S. K. Sloan 5 Comments

sosf-news-briefs-logo.jpgJonathan Hensleigh (“Punisher,” “Armageddon”) teams up with the Walt Disney Co. to bring “Nine Lives” to the screen. The film about a Manhattan detective who has survived being shot a ridiculous amount of times in the line of duty. Also on board for the project is Jerry Bruckheimer.

Microsoft launches HALO 3 next week and on Tuesday, the SCI FI Channel will dedicate a half hour segment to the new game.

“Resident Evil: Extinction,” the third and possibly final film in the Resident Evil franchise, premieres this Friday at a theater near you.

Apple is ramping up for a major sales push of its iPhone product in Europe and the company announced another drop in price on its iPod Nano.

The 2007 Rome Film Festival is gearing up for an onslaught of new entries. From the U.S. comes a feature called “The King of Kong,” about two men duking it out in a “Donkey Kong” videogame match. However the two most anticipated events will be a visit to the festival from the entire Coppola family of filmmakers and the unveiling of Gerard Depardieu’s new historical epic “1900.” Depardieu will be appearing in a new sci-fi film in 2008 called Babylon A.D. with Vin Diesel. “Babylon” will also star martial arts great Michelle Yeoh.

The Starz premium cable channel will release its entire lineup of anime films and television programs to Microsoft Xbox Live Marketplace and Amazon Unbox, according to Variety. Titles like “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” “Street Fighter” and “Virus” are just three of the hundreds of titles in the Starz film library that will be made available to the two download services.

Live-action flicks like “The Evil Dead” and “The Hills Have Eyes,” the “Masters of Horror” series, and the animated “Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms” and animated TV series like “Tripping the Rift” will also appear on Unbox, for download on PCs or TiVo digital video recorders.

NBC continues to offer many of its programs free online since leaving Apples iTunes. Three of its new sci-fi series pilots — “Bionic Woman,” “Chuck” and “Journeyman” are available free from the NBC site, as well as “Heroes.”

“Minesweeper: The Movie” — From College Humor, this make-believe film will give you another excuse to procrastinate for a full 90 minutes.

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the third film in the Narnia franchise, which was originally scheduled for a May 1, 2009 release is now scheduled for May 7, 2010. Production will begin next summer, instead of this coming January. The second film, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” was also pushed back 6 months from its original Christmas 2007 premiere to May 16, 2008. The “Caspian” change was done because the Walden/Sony project “The Water Horse” is due out on December 25, which would have pitted “Caspian” against one of the studio’s own products trying to reach the same demographic.

In our final brief — After six rounds of talks — both sides in the dreaded writer’s war with studio and network bosses has only seen the gap between them widen, making observers think a writer’s strike is unavoidable and inevitable. So, get ready for lots of “reality” and game show television.

I don’t know about the NBC site, but all of those pilots are available for free on Amazon Unbox.

My bad – that should read 2008 – let me fix that. 🙂 The friggin’ Star Trek reference was intended for another story I was writing at the same time….too much to do and so little time to do it. I need better multi-tasking skills. 😉

“Three of its new sci-fi series pilots – “Bionic Woman,” “Chuck” and “Journeyman” — are available free from the NBC site, as well as “Heroes.”

ummm, really? ’cause i just went to their site, then switched over to ie to download and use their video player (required), and the list of content that came up was pretty lame – under scifi channel it was about 300 vblogs for galactica and that’s it.

under nbc content it was predominantly dumb conan skits. so where are these pilots?

“…pushed back 6 months from its original Christmas 2007 premiere to May 16, 2008. The “Caspian” delay was done for two reasons – Sony studios didn’t want to have to compete against the anticipated J.J. Abrams film “Star Trek”…”

Um… Christmas 2007? Star Trek is almost ready to go and they haven’t even cast Kirk yet? That is one impressive turnaround time.
