We’ve reported on it and speculated for weeks but now we can confirm that actress Zoe Saldana has joined the cast of the new J.J. Abrams film “Star Trek” XI. She will play the pivotal role of communications officer Uhura. Acclaimed actress Nichelle Nichols starred as Uhura for the full 40 years of the franchise’s history.
Saldana is currently filming on the set of James Cameron’s highly anticipated sci-fi flick “Avatar.” She just wraped another thriller called “Vantage Point.” “Point” features a headline cast that includes “Lost” star Matthew Fox, Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, Academy Award winners Forest Whitaker and William Hurt.
Filming for “Star Trek” begins in November and will be released in theaters on December 25, 2008.
Richard Dee says
I am so looking forward to this film coming out. I have enjoyed Star Trek since the 60s, and I truly hope this new film will star true to the Star Trek philosophy. Zoe Saldana is a beautiful lady, and I hope she portrays Uhura with style and grace. Nichelle Nichols defined Uhura, so the older amongst us will have to give Zoe some room, and respect her portrayal. Good luck Zoe!
