From Robots to Gods

tn2_tobey_maguire_3.jpgSpider Man’s Tobey Maguire removes the spidey suit but replaces it with the coat and tie of a producer. He will be the showrunner for Warner Bros.’ new movie based on the classic 1980’s cartoon serial “Robotech.”

Rumor has it that Maquire may also be considering a starring role in the film about giant Earth mechas created from alien technology. He will be joined by fellow producer Drew Crevello (”The Grudge 2″). The script will come from Craig Zahler (”Rooster”).

In some other big screen news, Slice of SciFi has learned that “Rome” actor Kevin McKidd, who is set to headline the new NBC SF time-travel series “Journeyman” on September 24th, has stated that he may take on a role in the Marvel’s comic-to-film adaptation of “Thor - The God of Thunder.” Back in August, on Slice of SciFi Show #122, we reported “Thor” was under consideration for a big screen film. Inside studio sources are claiming that director Matthew Vaughn is pushing for McKidd to get a major part. The “Stardust” helmer carries a lot of weight after his success with the Claire Danes film and such hits as “Layer Cake” with Bond’s Daniel Craig and “Snatch,” which starred Jason Statham and Brad Pitt.

mckidd.jpg“I didn’t know about it either until I heard the rumors and I called my agent,” McKidd recently said at a conference. “And he went, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ve been talking to them about it.’ But the last I heard from my agent, they’re talking that they want to go for somebody much younger, a 19- or 20-year-old, for that role. So they’re reconceptualizing it as we speak.”

A younger actor for Thor still wouldn’t rule out McKidd for the project. “I think there’s the other main male character in that movie that I’m in consideration for,” reflected McKidd. “But, certainly by no means it’s not in the bag or anything and, to be honest, until I read a script I don’t really know. I haven’t really had a look at a script. This is all still just information that’s coming in. So, you know, it could be fun, but it just depends on what’s on the page. I think it all starts and finishes with the quality of the script.”

Wow thats a g*%#$damn long saga to condense into two hours or so. Maybe if they can do a “Star Wars” to it, end the movie with a high note but make it clear that the fight is only beginning, then they can maybe turn it into a trilogy that just, though barely IMO, be enough to cover the main points of the series.
Hope they win other than by singing though… oh crap SPOILER!!!!!

Yep, it was just a matter of time at this point. The company that owns the Robotech rights has been saying for a while that the Robotech movie getting made was all but 100% contingent on Transformers doing well. Guess what? Transformers did really well.

Sadly, I bet this means we’ll see a Gobot movie announced, soon, too…
