Apology & Promise From New Voyages

August 28, 2007 by Sam Sloan   || Category: Film News

The price of success when you produce such a quality product as the cast and crew of Star Trek: New Voyages has consistently done over the past few years, is sometime evident by how many people stampede your site for downloads all at the same time. Such was the case with the new George Takei guest appearance on “World Enough and Time.” But, fear not, the technical issues will soon be resolved. Until then you can read my review of the episode HERE.

DO NOT USE MININOVA OR ANY OTHER TORRENT SITE EXCEPT:

    http://newvoyages.blogsite.org/

Use of non-authorized sites is not only copyright infringement, but it hurts New Voyages, which is attempting to get an acurate count of how many people have watched the episode.

    Thanks Paul,

That comment automatically approved and I haven’t gotten around to monitoring until now, so good call, although we would have removed it during our normal daily monitoring process here at Slice.

It is not copyright infringment. New Voyages episodes are GNU public license.

If they weren’t GPL, they would be illegal. You can copy these episodes all you want, but you can’t sell em.

Paramount has tolerated New Voyages infringement of copyright and trademark….. ONLY BECAUSE…. these shows can’t be sold.

Not sure about that Kevin. While New Voyages cannot sell their product, it is still uniquely theirs and the content of each show, such as the scripts and ideas generated are still protected by law. The words of screenwriters David Gerrolds, Marc Scott Zicree and others on the show are protected under copyright law, therefore, the whole episode likewise is as well and under the same copy restrictions as any original Paramount product.

And, Paramount has not “tolerated” New Voyages only because they cannot be sold, but both sides are in continuous talks on agreements, cooperation and more. It is pretty exciting to see this kind of mutual respect and cooperation between what started out as a strictly fan series (but has grown to be so much more) and a huge corporation like Viacom/CBS Paramount and it may lead to even greater things for the series and for fans of it. Hopefully, time will tell.

This is what it says on their web

“The ‘New Voyages’ episodes are free for you to download and distribute for private, non-commercial viewing. However be aware that the episodes are fully protected by Federal and State Copyright Law. Unauthorized tampering, altering, or creating of derivative works from the episodes, or any images or audio contained therein is strictly prohibited and subject to civil and criminal penalties under the law.”

    Note, it says distribute.
