No Weekend Magic From Harry Can Stop Chuck and Larry

July 22, 2007 by Sam Sloan   || Category: Film News

inowpronounceyouchuckandlarry.gifThe big news this weekend is how fast magician Harry Potter was toppled from the number one slot at the box office. If things remain the same, the comedy duo of Kevin James and Adam Sandler will de-throne Potter with relative ease.

“I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” is the comedy about two fireman who pretend to be gay, get married and live together all for the sake of ensuring that the kids of one of the men will be guaranteed full benefit status should something untoward happen to him on the job while fighting fires. While this is truly an engaging flick I’m not sure it is worthy of first place. “Chuck and Larry” has already drawn nearly $35 million in ticket sales with several more hours to go in the weekend tally.

“Chuck and Larry” boasts of an all-star supporting cast that includes Jessica Biel, Dan Aykroyd, Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi, with a guest appearance by Richard Chamberlain.

“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” is a distant second with another $32+ million added to its growing pot. The “Hairspray” remake draws third place at almost $28 million, “Transformers” hangs in there at 4th and that little rat with the chef’s touch in “Ratatouille” remains in the top five adding another $11 million to its already impressive totals.

We will have the full Top 10 list for you later in the week.

Perhaps the box office is down for Order of the Phoenix because all of the fans have spent the weekend reading the final book… Now that we’ve finished book 7 we’re looking forward to returning to the theater to re-watch Phoenix … after Comic-Con this week.

Dear heavens….this will only encourage them to make more Adam Sandler films! Make it stop! LOL

Actually, the theater was surprisingly full when I went to see Order of the Pheonix on Saturday.

My friends and I went to watch Order of the Phoenix on Friday night, then drove over to the local bookstore to pick up our copies of Deathly Hallows right after. Can’t speak for how the theaters were the rest of the weekend, but they were definitely full on Friday.

wow, a difference of 2-3 million is a distant second? That’s an, uh, interesting take on the story.

When we are talking Harry Potter versus every other new film that came out over the past week, for it to even be in second by a few bucks?….yes, that is a distant 2nd.

I’m going to wait for the dvd on this one so I can make use of pause and slow motion for a Biel-tastic time.
