This story is not directly SF genre related but any time Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are talked about in the same breath and in the same movie, I’ve got to say something about it.
Probably two of the greatest film actors to ever come out of the entertainment industry have only been in one other movie together, the high body count film “Heat,” in which Bobby was the bad guy and Al the cop chasing after him.
It was just announced today at the Cannes Film Festival that the two giants of the big screen will be appearing together again in a new film called “Righteous Kill.” This time they are both good guys, in fact, cops working together to find and capture a serial killer. The film has also gotten a top notch director in Jon Avnet (producer of “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”). Screenwriter Russell Gewirtz, writer for “Inside Man” and the upcoming drama “Labyrinth” is responsible for Kill’s script.
Shooting will begin Aug. 6 in Connecticut for this $60 million feature.
Avi Lerner, one of the film’s producers had this to say about the excitement surrounding the project — “This is an event in world history,” he said. “They were in two scenes in ‘Heat.’ In this movie, they are in the whole thing together!”
The Redeemer says
Ummm… Jon Avnet certainly did NOT direct Inside Man.
Sam says
You are correct The Redeemer. I knew that but was thinking of Gewirtz’s script writing of Inside Man. No way I could mistake Spike Lee for Avnet. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
Tony says
Well, you know we’ll be covering this one when it comes out.
Thanks for the heads up, Sam!
Sam says
You bet Tony. This will be round two for the top contenders….Pacino won round one with a clean shot to the chest…., in this one they are friends, but the question is who will when in the word sparring department…if it’s a shout match — Big Al – hands down, no one can shout with such emotion like Pacino, but if its quiet determination and smarts, or fisticuffs (or better still – kick-ticuffs), all bets are on Bobby De Niro — You don’t want to screw around with Mr. Goodfellow! 😉
