Good news for American fans of the good Doctor — the third series of “Doctor Who” will debut on the SCI FI Channel later this year.
The third series (the 29th overall for the long-running show) will kick off in July, according to SCI FI. The series will start off with the Christmas special, “The Runaway Bride” and then launch into the heart of series three. The series should debut in the United States only a few weeks after the season finale airs in the UK.
Chris Regina, Vice President of Programming, SCI FI Channel, said ‘Doctor Who’ has become a favorite among SCI FI audiences. We are happy to bring the show back for its third season and look forward to following the Doctor’s continuing adventures with his newest companion.”
Executive producer and lead writer Russell T Davies says, “We were delighted and honored by the second series’ success, and we can promise new thrills, new laughs and some terrifying new aliens. The Doctor and Martha are destined to meet William Shakespeare, blood-sucking alien Plasmavores, The Judoon a clan of galactic stormtroopers and a sinister Dalek plot in 1930s New York.”
Last year, “Doctor Who” attracted a good audience to the SCI FI Channel, doubling the ratings of previous series in its time slot. Hopefully, SCI FI will allow it to remain on its popular Friday night airing and not move it around the schedule as it did with “Battlestar Galactica.”
This series of “Doctor Who” includes a record-setting episode. The third episode, “Gridlock” officially puts the episode total for “Doctor Who” at one more than all of the “Star Trek” combined episode count.
