iPod Saves Soldier’s Life in Iraq

According to an article found on Defense Tech an American soldier’s life was saved by the iPod he was carrying in his uniform pocket.

The soldier, Kevin Garrad, states that he didn’t even know he had been shot until he put on his earbuds to listen to some tunes.

It happened during a fire-fight with some insurgent forces. When the shooting had stopped and his patrol was over for the day Kevin returned to his bunk, put in his earbuds and proceeded to clean his weapon, which is standard procedure after it has been fired.

“You get into a ritual out there,” stated Garrad.

When the iPod failed to play any music he pulled it out of his pocket and where he expected to see his familiar iPod device all that greeted him was a twisted hunk of metal and plastic.

It would seem that during the shoot-out with the insurgents he himself had been shot and although he was wearing the required upgraded armor at the time (but not the newest issue) his iPod added an extra layer of protection that saved his life.

Garrad stated that he was happy the armor worked, but extremely pleased he had his trusty iPod with him at the time.

The United States Army claims that their newest armor can stop an AK-47 round. Garrad was not wearing the newest issue at the time, so his iPod gave him that extra layer of protection needed to keep him safe. Perhaps the military should consider making an iPod standard issue for combat troops.

It looks like Iraq is hard on iPods. This was Garrad’s second that had been damaged since arriving in-country. His first one was damaged also, but not by enemy fire.

Groovy! The mighty iPod saves the day! The only burning question - why did the iPod have to stop the bullet, where was his body armor?

I hate to be rain on the parade, but the Ipod did NOT stop the bullet. There was a follow up article about this and the Ipod did slow the bullet enough that when it hit the body armor, the armor stopped it without causeing the massive bruise that you usually get. His body armor would have stopped it anyway, its just that he didn’t notice it since it took out his Ipod
