I say John Cusack. He has the quirkyness and the acting style to pull that off.

I say none of the above or anyone else!!! The Move while not Perfect Dose not need a wHolly ood (sic) remake. Next there going to remake Casablanca, With a better ending. NO, NO, Please No. Don’t touch the Classics.

I say DON’T REMAKE THIS MOVIE! Can’t anyone in Hollywood come up with something remotely original? >:O

I agree that a remake of this particular film could be disasterous…a little hard to improve on perfection. But, Hollywood is Hollywood and, just as Spielberg is going to remake another classic that should be left alone (”When World’s Collide), so too, this film is slated for a remake by an unnamed director (at this time). So, keeping that in mind, the question still stands - of the actors listed, which can pull off the part of Klaatu and do it as wonderfully as Michael Rennie did in the original?

Sam, I have to disagree with you a bit on the quality of “When Worlds Collide” :)

While I count myself in the majority who do not want this movie remade, if it had to be done, I’d go with either John Cusack or William H. Macy now, or Daniel Radcliffe, 12-15 years from now.

I’m not as skeptcial about a remake as most of you. Granted, the odds are against it, but if they take a littel care with this one, they could stick closer to the short story, plus we don’t have the kind of draconian censors running things like they did back then. The original had a lot of politicla and religous subtetxs taken out of it. If they get the write team (writers, diretcors, and actors), this could turn out to be brilliant. Keeping my figners crossed for that.

    Also, I’m going with Cusack.

Hey the remake can be good. John Carpenter’s “The Thing” is a masterpiece and a remake of “The Thing from Another World”

If the movie had to be remade and I had to choose from the list of actors given, I would choose William H. Macy for a quiet but vaguely desperate Klaatu, William Hurt for a quiet and thoughtful role, or Daniel Craig for an intensity with the possibility of instant violence. While it certainly would be interesting to see some of the others like Johnny Depp in the role, I think it would be interesting only as an academic exercise.

I really think the three actors I named would have very different approaches to Klaatu that could put different spins on the story. Macy might be a Klaatu who was desperate to get his message across. Hurt would do a lot of talking about the stupidity of humanity. And Craig would emphasize the possibility that if Gort didn’t blow humanity to hell and back, then human beings would do it to themselves.

I added Hayden Christensen’s name to the list as a sarcastic joke….and damn if he isn’t in the lead. You just never know what to expect from people. I thought for sure either Sam Neill, John Cusack or William H. Macy would get run away votes for this role.

That must mean Hayden Christensen reads SoSF!
