Could 2007 Set a Box-Office Record?

Written by: Michael Hickerson (SoSF Journalist)

The first three months of 2007 have been very kind to Hollywood, thanks to the box-office success of “Ghost Rider,” “300″ and “Wild Hogs.” All three films have crossed the $100 million mark at the box-office with a fourth movie, Eddie Murphy’s “Norbit” creeping close to the barrier at $94 million.

Early box-offices successes have Hollywood hopeful that 2007 could shatter box-office records. And with tent-pole features such as “Spider-Man 3″ “Pirates of the Caribbean 3″, “Shrek 3″, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” and “Transformers” on the horizon for the summer season, a new great year for Hollywood could be in the making.

We’re probably going to challenge for the biggest year” in ticket sales, says Marvin Levy of DreamWorks.

“It’s hard not to be optimistic,” Levy says, “particularly when people thought this would be a slow time of year.”

Interestingly, the three top-grossing films of the year have all been panned by critics, while critically acclaimed movies such as “Zodiac” have languised at the box-office.
