Why isn’t ‘300″ considered a genre film? Frank Miller’s interpretation of the Battle of Thermopylae, while VISUALLY STUNNING, can’t be considered historically accurate movie. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED this film (seen it twice, bought the soundtrack), but it is defiantly fantasy. You’ve got a floating Oracle, super-human warriors, hideously deformed ‘freaks’, and a 10-foot tall Xerxes. If that isn’t fantasy I don’t know what is. Oh, and by the way, GO SEE THIS FILM.

The same reason I didn’t put Zodiac (like I did last week) as a genre film. I didn’t want to get a lot of flack from those who say its just a reimaged elaboration of real historical facts.

So, now you are giving me flack. Damned if I do, damned if I don’t. :)

“300″ is definitely a genre film, because the main inspiration for it came from Frank Miller’s graphic novel, despite the fact that it is based on a historical event.

“Zodiac” is not, because it is intended as more of a standard dramatic presentation. I also consider it a psychological thriller, and not a horror movie (based on what I’ve seen of the trailers and heard from viewers).

If “300″ had been done more in the fashion of “Glory” than “Sin City”, then yes, I might call it differently.

That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it :)

Well, regardless of what category people want to place it in…it is one hellva a good movie and needs to be seen on the big screen for the full impact of it….and I bowed under the weight of tremendous pressure and made 300 (and Zodiac) in bold…so stop the emails please. ;)

Heh. I still don’t think “Zodiac” is genre, but if others are complaining, I’d like to hear some of the comments.

And even though I saw “300″ a few days before it’s release, I’m still planning on seeing it again on the IMAX screen. That will truly be incredible.

on a completely different “300″ topic, the movie is being boycotted in Iran since they are descendent’s of Persians. they see the movie provoking “animosity” towards Iranians. Of course it’s also becoming the thing to pirate there too!
