“300″ Defeats All Competition

March 12, 2007 by Sam Sloan   || Category: Film News

Zack Snyder’s big screen imagining of the popular Frank Miller graphic novel “300″ conquered all comers this weekend in theaters.

In the US alone, the film garnered over $70 million in box office receipts making it the highest grossing film in one weekend showing so far in 2007. It is now the third biggest R-rated opener ever, behind “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Passion of the Christ,” and the biggest R-rated opening film ever for the month of March.

The historic tale of the Spartan battle against the invading Persians, known as the Battle of Thermopylae is a feast of cinematic beauty for the eyes and ears immersing the audience into a time in history when men were men and the woman were glad of it, and when honor meant it may be necessary to lay one’s live down for a cause greater than personal need.

Snyder’s vision of Miller’s written material was portrayed beautifully on the screen, with the director sacrificing very little of the writer’s original material, making the film not only a thrill to watch, but a intriquing story that captures the viewer’s imagination like movies are suppose to.

Rounding out the estimated top five are Travolta’s ensemble chopper-fest “Wild Hogs,” followed by the children’s fantasy “Bridge to Terabithia,” Cage’s “Ghost Rider” followed by the suspense thriller “Zodiac.”
